Our cooking and baking needs are dependent on our ovens. So, what happens when, just before the big Christmas dinner, your oven stops heating. All you need to do is call Sunshine Appliance Repair and we will come out and fix your oven. DIY repairs are generally not recommended, but there are a few basic repairs you can handle yourself.
For a gas oven, this can be due to the igniter being faulty. For an electric oven, this can be due to the heating element.
For a gas oven, first test the burners. You should hear a few clicks and whoosh sounds after you turn on the oven. If you don't, then the igniter needs replacing. Separate the range from the oven and then detach the quick-release connection. Install the new igniter and then put everything back.
For an electric oven, first, test the heating element to see if it turns red. If it doesn't, it needs repairing. Using only a screwdriver, separate the range, take out any covers or screws, and then insert the new element. Once you're done, put everything back in its place.
If you notice that your oven is not reaching the right temperature, then the temperature sensors might need servicing. First, check to see if it is touching the wall of the oven. If it is, it's not reading the internal temperatures properly and needs to be adjusted. You can also use an ohmmeter to test the sensor's functionality. If the resistance of the temperature sensor isn't rising with the oven's internal temperature, then it needs replacing.
The oven might also need to be recalibrated. An oven thermometer only costs about $6 and can be useful in these situations. Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (176.67 degrees Celsius). Record the temperature changes in twenty-minute intervals over two hours. Add up all of the temperatures and divide by the number of recordings. If there is a large variation, then you need to manually adjust the oven's temperature dial.
This is the most obvious sign that the oven needs to be repaired. Check the temperature sensor and the heating element and replace them if necessary.
You may also need to learn what works best for your oven, in terms of cooking. Ovens have different hot and cold spots. You might need to adjust the height of your cooking racks and even rotate your food so that your food cooks properly.
